Mrinalini Sarabhai, The Indian Dance Goddess, Passes Away At 97. These Beautiful Videos Are A Perfect Ode To Her

She was the pride of Ahmedabad; will always be. Mrinalini Sarabhai wasn’t just a dancer, she was an institution. The woman brought about the most beautiful dance revolution in the country and presented dance as an art. We see Mrinalini Sarabhai as one of the torch bearers for taking off every taboo attached to dance back in her days.

She celebrated dance and the country celebrated her. Today, we just haven’t lost her, we have lost one of the brightest star of the dance fraternity. Her son Kartikeya Sarabhai, founder of Centre of Environment Education and daughter Mallika Sarabhai were by her side. “My mother just left for her eternal dance,” her daughter, also leading danseuse, actor and activist, said in a Facebook post announcing the death, reported by The Hindu.

Mrinalini Sarabhai hasn’t only been an artist herself, but also a huge creative support for several groups and houses who asked for her help time and again. She has been the role model for several danseuses in the country and abroad.

It was reported that she was struggling with some serious infection in her system and was fighting it bravely. She was trained in Bharatnatyam, Kathakali and Mohiniyattom, she was educated at Shantiniketan under Rabindranath Tagore.

Mrinalini Sarabhai is in everyone’s prayers, memories and wishes today. People took to Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms to express their deepest condolences to the Sarabhai family. Several uploaded pictures of the beautiful danseuse.

She passed away at 10am today, Thursday, 21st January, 2016 at her home in Ahmedabad. The Padma Bhushan awardee was the wife of Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai. She was admitted at the hospital a day before because of serious health condition.
