Indian Christian Wedding
Hollywood has spoilt us when it comes Christian weddings. Most non-Christians in India believe that all Christians get married just the way they show in ‘English films’. The reality is that Indian Christian weddings are quite different from what you see in films.
1THEY AREN’T SHORT

Most of us believe that Christian weddings are the shortest in the world. The bride and the groom exchange vows, slip the ring in the finger, kiss and they are done. Fifteen minutes and you are married! This could be true abroad, but in India the entire process takes about an hour or more. It’s an entire mass and if the sermon goes on for long, God help the couple. If the couple chooses to only exchange the vows, then and only then the wedding ends within fifteen minutes or so.
2IT’S NOT ALWAYS A GOWN

Yeah, bubble busted. Contrary to the popular belief that Christian brides always and only wear a gown at their nuptials, the fact is that many don’t. It all depends on the culture and on choice. There are many brides who wear a saree for their wedding and are extremely comfortable.
3THE CHURCH GIVES THE VOWS

In most cases (almost all, to be honest), the bride and the groom do not write their own vows. The church already has a pre-written set of vows for the bride and the groom since centuries and most couples only recite those.
4ALL WOMEN ARE NOT IN FROCKS

If it’s a Christian wedding most people assume that all women are going to be in gowns, frocks and skirts. This is not entirely true. Most women opt for designer sarees and lenghas for the wedding and reception. It’s not like everyone’s going to be in short clothes and dance around.
5MEHENDI

Yeah, you heard that right. There are many Christian brides who like to get a beautiful mehendi art done on their hands before the wedding and they love it.
6ARRANGED MARRIAGES ARE OUR THING TOO!

I don’t know why most people assume that Christians only have love marriages! That’s the lamest thing I have heard. Arranged marriages in Christians are as common as in any other culture.
7BACHELOR’S PARTY/BRIDAL SHOWER

Firstly, this is not a RITUAL! It’s not like the groom’s best man or the bride’s maid of honour has to do it. It’s absolutely subjective. Some have it and many don’t. And now it’s not only limited to a particular culture, almost everyone has it these days.
8IT’S NOT ‘KISS THE BRIDE’

For some reason, everyone waits for this in Christian weddings. It excites most people because no other culture allows this. Oh dear Hollywood, why you do this? I am not saying that this doesn’t happen, but just in case you thought that you will get to see a lip lock between every newly married Christian couple, then you are highly mistaken. Few do it, some choose to kiss on the cheek and MANY DON’T. So everytime you attend a Christian wedding, don’t expect that you will get to go all dreamy and say “aww” because a couple is kissing at the altar.
